Symbolism in the painting of Russian artists
Symbolism, as a cultural trend, originated in the late 19th century in France, but later acquired a global character, capturing, in particular, and Russian painting.
The birth of Russian symbolism
Russian Symbolists first manifested themselves in 1904year in Saratov, where the exhibition "Scarlet Rose" was held. A group of like-minded people was also called the "Scarlet Rose", who organized the exhibition and invited Mikhail Vrubel and Viktor Borisov-Muscatova to visit it. Both of the above-named artists were bright representatives of Russian symbolism in painting. It is noteworthy that the rose, appearing in the name of this group, was chosen by its representatives as a symbol of integrity and purity. The Purpose of Symbolism
Among all the representatives of symbolism, whichThey created in Germany, America, France, Belgium, Norway, the Russians are rightfully recognized as the most outstanding and outstanding. A distinctive feature of symbolism as a pictorial genre is the pushing to the forefront of a world that is not material, as in realism, but spiritual and ideological. However, this does not mean that these two worlds are opposed to each other in symbolism. On the contrary, Symbolist artists set as their goal to unite these two worlds together, to hold an invisible bridge between them, to establish communication. It is the Russian Symbolists, as many have noted, approached this goal like no other. Despite the fact that realism as a pictorial genre was presented as an antipode of symbolism, nevertheless both realism and impressionism always went somewhere alongside symbolism. Symbolists even relied on the creation of works on realism and in no case did not deny it. Features of Russian Symbolism
As in the whole of Symbolism, the works of RussianSymbolists distinguished from other picturesque paintings, the image at the head is not everyday, but mysterious and even divine. This divine can find an outlet in the experiences of the character of the picture, and can be expressed in natural phenomena, as well as in nature itself. This is well seen in the most outstanding work of Russian artists of symbolism - "The Demon Seated", whose author is Mikhail Vrubel. Distinguished in the creation of the Russian symbolism are Valentin Serov, Viktor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Nesterov. These artists mainly focused on the subject of the personality of a person who does not have divine principles, at the same time, his inner experiences give the impression of a certain elevation and detachment from the material world. All of them brought the Russian spirit to this genre of painting, like symbolism, and, of course, made a special contribution to the development of symbolism as a picturesque trend.
