In the seventeenth century, Russia lost territory,on which is the modern St. Petersburg, Sweden. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, Russians and Swedes fought for an outlet to the Baltic Sea in the Northern War, which lasted until 1721. Peter the First thought that the best place to build a defensive fortress would be the delta of the Neva, which flows into the Gulf of Finland. The construction of the fort began three years after the outbreak of the war, in 1703, the territory of the Hare Island was chosen for this purpose. The fortress was named St. Peter-Burkh, this name later passed to the city, mutating to St. Petersburg. The date of the founding of the fortress is considered to be the date of birth of the city.

Despite the fact that officially the city appeared on thethe Neva River as early as 1703, only a few years later began the active construction of St. Petersburg. Embankments were built, houses, piers, forts and other structures were erected. Peter the First sent thousands of people from different provinces annually for labor service to build a city. Simultaneously, the city was gradually settled - in it were given out to plots of noblemen and eminent families, the Tsar himself also built a house for himself, which became the only wooden structure preserved until our times.

Peter the Great was attracted to the construction of Europeanarchitects, so that the architectural appearance of St. Petersburg is not inferior to the most beautiful cities in Europe at that time. Thanks to foreign artists in the city appeared Peter and Paul Cathedral, Alexander Nevsky Lavra, Peter's Gate, Peterhof. Peter's goal was to create a cultural, economic and scientific center of Russia, and he succeeded.
