How rivers depend on climate

How rivers depend on climate

Outstanding Russian geographer - climatologist Alexander Voeikov called the river products of climate. The climatic features of the terrain on which they flow depend on the abundance of rivers, their regime, freezing, the density of the river network, the type of feeding and many other characteristics.

In a mountainous area, rivers fill with watermainly due to the melting of ice, the regime of such rivers will directly depend on climate and weather. In spring, when the snow melts, they are usually deep-water, they come out of the coast, spread, and freeze during the cold period. A plain river usually has a small number of tributaries and the climate for its regime has less influence, since it can be filled with underground springs.

Each type of climate differs in numberprecipitation. The rivers flowing in areas of a damp climate are deep, the rivers of arid areas are shallow, and sometimes they can dry out completely. The climate influences the possibility of navigation - the main large rivers of our country freeze in the winter season, so navigation is possible only in the warmer months.

The type of supply of rivers is also determined by the climate. The Volga, the Yenisei, the Ob and the Lena feed on mostly spring melt waters and summer rains. The waters of summer monsoon rains fill the rivers of the Pacific Ocean basin. In the Altai rivers have snow and glacial food. On the territory of the lowlands of the Caucasus, where precipitation in the form of rains falls even in winter, there are rivers predominantly with rain feeding. Such rivers can have unpredictable sharp short-term rises caused by intense rains - floods. Floods are often accompanied by floods. The strongest floods are also noted in the south of the Far East.
