What color is metallic?

The difference between metallic paint and ordinary enamel

Paints such as "metallic" can be any color -gray, black, red, green, etc. All of them are distinguished by characteristic metallic luster. The color of the car is metallic silver - one of the most popular because of its versatility and practicality. Dirt and dust on such a machine are less noticeable, respectively, and it can be washed less often. Scratches are also less noticeable. Conventional automotive enamel consists of the main three components: a pigment, a linker and a solvent. Metallic paint is more complex in composition. In it there is one more fourth component - a thin layer of aluminum powder. Mixed with enamel, aluminum particles reflect light and create a metallic sheen. In addition, they protect the body from corrosion, and paint - from premature fading.

Paint application procedure

Currently, there are three coloring systemsauto in metallic colors - single-layer, two- and three-layer. The first is rarely used due to the difficulty of applying. Three-layer is used when you need to get white pearlescent color or create a complex effect (for example, chameleon). Such a paint visually changes its hue depending on the viewing angle. When painting in three layers as a base, the ground-toner and transparent mother-of-pearl are used. The most common option - two-layer color. In this case, the body is first covered with a base, and then varnished. The paint falls well on the ground and dries quickly. If there are any defects, they are removed by polishing. The technology of applying metallic paint is generally more difficult than applying conventional automotive enamel. The layer should be very even, otherwise any stains on the surface will be better visible. The technology implies three stages: a set of preparatory works, the population of the base, the application of varnish. With a two-layer system, the base is applied by two layers, the second one is the drier. Each layer should dry naturally in 10-30 minutes, the exact time is indicated in the instructions for the paint. As a base, paint is used, which gives the metallic effect, which in itself does not have a luster and resistance to atmospheric phenomena. To protect it, varnish is used. Before applying the lacquer, it is diluted with a solvent and a fixer. It is applied by two or three layers on a properly dried base to avoid bloating. Typically, the procedures for coloring the machine in metallic colors are made in the car workshop, but there are motorists who do it themselves.
