How to determine the printer port
How to determine the printer port
Determining the port to which the printer is connected, can be performed by a user of a computer running Windows OS, the standard means of the system itself and does not imply the use of additional software.
Instructions
1
The vast majority of printersgenerations use the LPT port to connect. USB printers almost always have Plug & Play support, which means automatic configuration of such Windows printers. The default port is LPT1, but the Device Manager utility allows the user to configure this option.
2
Call up the main system menu by pressing the button"Start", and go to "Printers and Faxes". Find the icon of the printer you are using and open the context menu with the right mouse button click. Specify the "Properties" item and select the "Ports" tab of the opened dialog box. Determine the port used by the printer.
3
When installing a new printer on a computer, running Windows XP version, go back to the main menu "Start" and go to "Control Panel". Expand the "Printers and Other Devices" link and expand the "Printers and Faxes" node. Select the "Add Printer" command in the left pane of the opened dialog box with a double click and skip the first wizard window by clicking the "Next" button.
4
Apply the checkbox in the line "Local printer"the second window of the wizard and wait until the printer is detected automatically. If the wizard could not find the printer connection module, click the "Next" button in the corresponding wizard dialog box and select the option "LPT1: (Recommended printer port)" in the "Use port" drop-down menu. Confirm the changes are saved by clicking the "Next" button and follow the recommendations of the installation wizard.
5
Please note that printers, using ports other than COM, LPT or USB, can be forwarded to the network only if Windows Server 2003 is installed on the local computer. Changing this situation is possible only if you make changes to the registry entries.
