How to increase memory on XP

To support performance in Windows XP, do notit makes sense to install additional RAM modules over 3 GB, since the system simply will not see them. But it is worthwhile to work on increasing the amount of virtual memory, namely, to increase the size of the paging file, which will positively affect performance. If WinXP 64-bit is installed on your computer, then you can increase both physical memory and virtual memory.

How to increase memory on XP

How to increase physical memory

Loosen the fixing screws located on the rearpanel of the PC system unit, remove the cover and put the case on its side. Look inside the system unit. On the motherboard, find the RAM dice. Usually there are 1-2 pcs. In order to remove memory modules, remove the clips from both sides and gently pull them out of the connector. Look at the memory brand. It is printed either on the module itself, or on the label. Look at the amount of memory chips, and estimate the possibilities of expanding the amount of RAM, based on the condition that Windows XP 32 -bit can only see up to 3 GB. If an extension is required and possible, then purchase additional memory modules. It is recommended to put RAM dies of the same brand and volume in order to avoid device conflicts. Install a new set of modules in slots. To do this, the plate must be properly inserted into the connector and pressed until it clicks. Replace the cover and screw it with screws.

Increase virtual memory

Initially, the amount of virtual memory isthe amount of physical RAM. To increase the virtual memory, you need to right-click on the "My Computer" icon and go to the "Properties" section. Then go to the "Advanced" tab, select "Options" - "Performance". In the "Performance parameters" change the "Virtual memory". This window is used to configure the parameters associated with virtual memory, namely, it is possible to adjust the size of the paging file. Typically, the default value is "Size by system choice". The list contains the amount of paging file for each disk. To increase the size of the paging file, select the Custom Size option. In the dialog that opens, specify the initial (current) file size, and then its maximum volume in the corresponding field. The minimum size should be more than the amount of RAM installed on the PC physically, 1.5 times, and the maximum - 4 times. Check the total file size on all disks. It is also recommended to remove the paging file from the system disk and transfer it to another disk. To remove the paging file from other disks, you must select the paging file and specify "No paging file". The actual experience in removing the swap file clearly does not answer the question: does productivity increase at the same time? Therefore, simply remove this file from the system disk. Select the logical disk where the swap file will be stored. Apply all the changes and restart the PC for them to take effect.
