Because they did not worship the pagan gods, the king who ruled at the time subjected the daughters of Sophia to terrible torture, and then executed, cutting off their head. Mothers had to watch the torment of their little daughters. Unable to survive such a grief, she died three days after their execution. For a great sacrifice, Vera, Hope, Love, who was only 12, 10 and 9 years old at the time of execution, and their mother Sofia were ranked as Christian saints. And their names began to personify the main virtues existing on earth - faith in God, hope for the best and God's help, and love without foundation and self-interest for every living creature. Sofia, translated from Greek, means "wise" and personifies God's wisdom on earth. This holiday has been celebrated by Orthodox Christians for many centuries. In ancient Russia, the Day of the Holy Martyrs of Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia was also called "All-Motherly Woman's Name-Day." And this holiday began with women's lamentation - in every house the village women shed tears over their miserable fate, lamented the dead or ungodly loved ones, ungrateful husbands or a hard life. Today this holiday is remembered for the great sacrifice of the Holy Martyrs. People congratulate their loved ones with the faith, hope and love that exist on earth, as well as those women who were named after these Holy Martyrs. Orthodox believers go to church on September 30, where a moleben is held in the early morning in honor of the Holy Martyrs of Faith, Hope , Lubov and their mother Sophia, and put candles in memory of them. Temples on this day are decorated with flowers and look very festive.
