The main attraction of the city isThe fortress of Olavinlinna, or St. Olaf. It was around it that settlements were built that received the status of a city. At first the fortress was intended to protect local territories from encroachments by Russian troops. She changed several times from Swedish rule to Russian, but then she was in the middle of the borders in Finland and lost her true destiny. Now on the territory of the fortress there are large-scale festivals and fairs in honor of big holidays. In winter, it becomes a venue for the Ice Sculpture Festival, and in summer classical opera performances are held there. In the acoustics of medieval walls, something absolutely incredible is obtained. Whatever was arranged in Olavinlinna, it invariably remains the main symbol of Savonlinna.

Near the fortress there is a localThe Museum of Local History of Riisisaari, which is also worth a visit upon arrival in Savonlinna. There are permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions showing the life of the Finnish people, the culture and beauty of these places. There are many exhibits about the history of the city and the country as a whole. Here you can see what Savonlinna looks like from a bird's eye view, and see mini-copies of the ships. Real ships, located on the pier behind the museum, can be explored in the summer, when the entrance to their decks opens. On one of the steamers, you can even make a one-hour cruise on local water bodies.

The oldest street in the city is the streetLinnankatu. Before, artisans lived here, now it is one of the most prestigious areas of Savonlinna. On this street there is an interesting Toy Museum. It is called "Suruton", which translates as "Unaware of sadness." Indeed, both children and adults here can plunge into a naive and immediate atmosphere. Initially, the exhibits were collected by the teacher of artistry, and now there are more than 3 thousand. There are ordinary dolls and soft toys, as well as doll furniture, typewriters, collectible dolls, items for children's games, old toys (created in the XVIII century), dolls from around the world.

In the vicinity of Savonlinna there are also manynotable. So, in the town of Punkaharju (30 km from the city) is the largest art center in Northern Europe called Retretti. Interestingly, most of the exhibits are in halls organized in caves. Exhibited here are not only Finnish artists, but also foreign masters. Expositions in caves are open to tourists only in the summer.

In the same picturesque place is the famousThe Kerimäki church, which is the largest wooden Christian church, accommodating about 5 thousand people. The construction of the church dates back to 1847. It functions (religious services, weddings, holidays and concerts are held) only in the summer, since heating is not provided for in the office, and winters in Finland are quite severe. In winter, services take place in a small church, which was built side by side in 1953. But on Christmas Day, early in the morning, they come to a large church, which is filled with warmth, thanks to the many lighted candles.

Also in Punkaharju there is a museum dedicated tothe main wealth and symbol of Finland - the forest. In the Lusto Forest Museum, you can get acquainted with the rich world of the forest, see large-sized machinery, and also hear invented stories about trolls and other fairy-tale characters. Children here can climb on a tree, look into the den to the clubfoot, play. For adults, it is provided for the management of a real loader and an exhibition of large-sized machinery. For relaxation there is a room for silence, where you can escape from the city's bustle for a short time: sit, enjoy the sounds of nature, observe the inhabitants of the forest and dream of the most intimate.

There is another forest, which is definitely worth itTo visit, visiting Savonlinna. It is located on the road between Savonlinna and Imatra. This forest is called mystical, and not for nothing. It is an exhibition of surreal concrete figures under the open sky. Sculptor from Finland Vejo Rönkösen is the author of this project. He initially created figures on his own site, where he let all comers. Now the mystical forest was his heritage. The author's fantasy is really amazing, and walking between mysterious figures of people standing alone or in groups is more like watching a scene of a fantastic film, especially in the dark. Next to the statues is a small wooden house where the sculptor lived while creating these masterpieces.
