Mab is a powerful fairy queen. Sometimes she is considered a midwife, only she helps to appear not to babies, but to magical dreams. Shakespeare's Mercutio describes Queen Mab as a miniature creature that travels at night in a charcoal chariot wheel over the thoughts of sleeping people, forcing them to see in the dream the fulfillment of their cherished desires.
