Assess your level of knowledge of the German language. If you have never studied it, before you start reading, you need to learn the basic language minimum. Learn the alphabet, elementary grammatical forms, simple words and phrases. You can do it yourself, in a group or individually with a teacher. The latter option will help you to master the initial level much faster and better.

Refresh the knowledge you have gained in school or in courses if you have already dealt with German. Run through the German textbook or the site for self-study foreign languages.

Choose the literature. The text that you will master, not only has to match the complexity of your level of language knowledge, but also to be interesting to you. For an entry-level fairy tales or funny short stories, for the average take a modern detective novel or a classic work. More complex texts, for example, philosophical or technical, are more suitable for advanced level.

Start reading, trying not to look inthe dictionary. At first it will be difficult for you, but gradually you will find out that you can guess the meaning of some words yourself. The words learned in this way will be kept in memory better than as a result of banal cramming. In addition, reading live text, not a textbook, you will remember the stable expressions used in German speech, and you will better understand the principles on which sentences are formulated.

If you are reading a book specifically designed forfor students of German, each chapter of the work may contain tasks for self-examination. In carrying out these tasks, you will better understand the meaning of the reading and check how well you understand what has been read.
