How to make a hammock with your own hands

Hammock - the invention of the Indians of South America. It was they who came up with the idea to do this unpretentious leisure object, which they used to arrange a night in the jungle. Indian hammocks differed slightly from modern products, they were made from the bark of a hamak tree (hence the name of these hanging beds). Later, hammocks appeared, woven from strong ropes and made of a single canvas. In Europe, they were caught thanks to the mariners, who appreciated this comfortable "furniture" and began using wicker nets on ships instead of beds.

Materials for weaving a hammock

For work you will need:

  • a strong synthetic rope (length depends on the size of the hammock);
  • 4 m of thinner synthetic rope;
  • scissors;
  • 2 brusks 3 cm thick and 0.8 m long;
  • roulette;
  • a simple pencil;
  • 2 metal rings with a diameter of 10 cm;
  • drill.

Stages of manufacturing a wicker hammock

Make markings on the bars for holes on thedistance of 8 cm from each other. Using a drill, drill holes, and their diameter should be such that they easily pass a rope folded in half.

Cut the rope into pieces, the length of which is 3times the product value, i.e. if you plan to make a hammock length of 1.8 m, then you need to prepare lengths of 5.4 m. The number of blanks should equal the number of holes on the bar, multiplied by 2.

Take 2 pieces and thread them through onehole on the bar. Pull one end of the ropes to a length equal to a quarter of the length of the future hammock. Then pass them through the metal ring, bend the rope and tie the end with a strong knot. In the same way, fasten all the other ropes. To be more comfortable to weave, hang the ring on the hook, located at a distance of about 1.5-2 m from the floor, and the ends of the ropes roll into small tangles or fold them into the folds that are unwound during the work.

Tie the ends of the ropes, threaded through the holesbar, pairwise by double knots, thus connect a piece from one hole with a rope from another. Next, knit the grid in the same way, but in a checkerboard pattern, retreating 3-5 cm from the nodes of the previous row. Do not make the grid cells too large.

Weave the necessary value of the grid and threadropes in pairs through the holes in the second bar. Place it as close as possible to the last row of nodules. Pass the ends of the ropes through the second metal ring and tie them with knots.

To ensure that the hammock does notstretched, insert a synthetic rope of a smaller diameter around the edges of the product. Cut 2 pieces of 2 m each and thread them through the cells along the edges of the mesh. Fasten the ends of the rope on both sides with double knots.

How to Hang a Hammock

If your site has fairly large trees with a trunk diameter of at least 30 cm, growing at a distance of 1.5-2 m from each other, then the hammock can be attached to them at a level of 1.5 m from the ground.

Another option is to install a special supportfor a hammock. Bury 2 pillars in the ground (metal or wooden). Screw in them strong metal anchors with hooks and hang the hammock behind the rings. Lying in it will be much nicer if you put a blanket and a few pillows on the net.
