In Judaism, God sends an angel of death to the soulthe person who has time to die. At the same time, the angel of death can be associated with Satan. There is an ominous legend according to which the angel of death Samael (aka Satan) comes to take human life, holding a knife in its hands, from the tip of which 3 drops of poison are flowing. The first drop interrupts life, the second represents the bile of death, and the third completes the terrible business that has begun. As befits Satan, Samael is only for the souls of sinners. He is an ominous black figure holding a jagged knife. For the righteous souls comes the angel Gabriel. He also brings a knife, but perfectly even.

In the Christian tradition, the angel of death sometimesis considered the archangel Gabriel, who informed the Virgin Mary of the imminent arrival of death. Also, the angels of death are often called the Fallen Angels, who, having fallen to Hell and turned into demons, try to enthrall as many people as possible. In Islam and Judaism, the role of the death angel is played by Azrael, who accompanies the souls on the way to another world.

There are many stories about how a person tries to deceive the angel of death, but this is practically impossible for anyone. But with him you can agree on a delay. Often, the angel of death can be seen inworks of art, especially in literature and cinema. A genuinely French poet, playwright and filmmaker Jean Cocteau created in his play, and later in the movie Orpheus, an absolutely unusual image of the death angel, named after Ertebiz. His Ertebiz is a handsome young man, a former student who committed suicide because of unhappy love and turned into a chauffeur and assistant to a beautiful and mysterious lady named Death.

However, Ertebiz is by no means deprived of humanfeelings: he sincerely and selflessly falls in love with Eurydice and makes selfless attempts to preserve her life and family happiness with Orpheus. Not without reason, some researchers believe that Ertebiz is a kind of double for Orpheus and, perhaps, part of the soul of Cocteau himself. This is the evolution of the image of a powerful and mysterious angel of death.
