What is a satellite city
What is a satellite city
The word "satellite" in most people is associatedwith the cosmos and planets. However, this notion is also used in urban planning and urban development: satellite cities have emerged as a special class of settlements.
Main features of the satellite city
Companions are cities or townstype, which adjoin a larger settlement. If several satellites appear around a certain center, it is an agglomeration. Life in such cities has its own peculiarities, arising from the orientation toward a large center. Among the population there is migration (labor, educational, pendulum), between the main city and its companion there are intensive and various communications. Georubanistics (the science of cities) refers to satellites absolutely all populated areas falling into the zone of influence of the city center. The list is not limited to cities built according to satellite-specific projects. For example, Moscow has one official satellite city - Zelenograd. In fact, the satellites of the Russian capital can be considered many cities of the Moscow region, as well as settlements located on the borders of adjacent areas with it.Satellite cities in Russia
The transition to agglomerations in Russia has led to,that quite a few people began to live in relatively small areas. Previously, this was not observed: in the country there were separate city-leaders, who had their own zones of influence. St. Petersburg can be considered an exception. This city was built simultaneously with the fortresses, residences and industrial centers that were located next to it and were its companions. The satellite cities are a phenomenon that began to spread actively in the 20th century. Such settlements allowed to more fully realize the potential of the centers-leaders, solve their socio-economic and urban problems. Big Russian cities have more than 350 other small cities in their zones of influence. Most satellites were built relatively recently. There are a lot of new towns among them, but the cities that developed on the basis of rural settlements prevail. According to statisticians, about a third of cities in Russia are in the territories of influence of large centers. Only a few of the big cities do not have satellites: Khabarovsk, Omsk, Tyumen, Syktyvkar, Kurgan, Yoshkar-Ola, Ulan-Ude and some others. In a separate type of satellite towns, science cities are distinguished, the main difference being high intellectual potential. Near the city-leader they have favorable conditions for development.
