Psychosomatics: a look at the causes of disease

Psychosomatics is the direction in medicine, according to which psychological factors are considered the causes of physical diseases. Simply put, the cause of stomach ulcers may be neurosis. And hypertensive crises are very often caused by neurogenic factors.

What does the body tell us about?

The term "psychosomatics" can be used ina different meaning, in addition to a special view of the causes of disease. Psychosomatic in this case called contrived diseases. They can "appear" among medical students studying various diseases. In the process of studying, applicants find the symptoms of a disease - trembling in the muscles, pain in the solar plexus, compression in the heart, tingling in the ears, severe headaches, signs of endocrine glands, imaginary hypertensive crises. When the effect on the psyche can begin to tremble hands, pain in the stomach, a false sense of hardening of the skin.

Historical roots of psychosomatics

The term "psychosomatic" arose not so long ago, butwhile this theory is old enough. The position on the unity of the soul and body was first formulated by Hippocrates in the doctrine of temperaments. In his opinion, the disease is a form of a person's reaction to the conditions of his life. It is from Hippocrates that comes the conviction that it is necessary to treat a person, and not a disease.
The doctrine of temperaments divides people into four types- choleric, phlegmatic, sanguine and melancholic. Hippocrates believed that the predominance of one of the liquids - yellow bile, lymph or phlegm, blood, black bile - creates a temperament.
Another pioneer of psychosomaticmedicine was Sigmund Freud. He argued that the psychological conflict, forced into the subconscious, bursts outward as a disease and creates seizures, paralysis, paresis, and the like. Neuroses Freud treated the method of free association. The patient lay on the couch and talked with the psychoanalyst, spontaneously responding to questions or words of the doctor. Thus, a psychological conflict was revealed, which was the cause of the neurosis.
Neurosis is a disease, a disorder of the nervoussystem as a result of the influence of factors that traumatize the psyche. There are three kinds of neuroses: neurasthenia, obsession, hysteria. Together with a neurosis often come various phobias.

Modern psychosomatic medicine

One of the representatives of alternative medicine,Louise Hey, in his publications quoted a table of psychosomatic significance of diseases. The allergy in this table is presented as a negation of one's own strength and a sign that you can not stand someone. A lump in the throat indicates a "swallowed" anger, an inability to stand up for oneself, a creative crisis. Muscular spasms disclose resistance to the new, unwillingness to go forward in life. Gastric diseases mean a prolonged uncertainty, a sense of doom. The rhinitis, excretions from the nasopharynx are interpreted as a pent up crying, the inner worldview of oneself as a victim. Fungus - reluctance to part with the past, outdated beliefs. The pain and crunch in the neck means lack of flexibility, stubbornness, unwillingness to look at the problem from the other side. Teeth symbolize solutions. Problems with wisdom teeth mean that you do not pay enough attention to laying a firm foundation for the future life. Anger, resentment, a desire to take revenge threatens with pain from a spasm in the jointed jaws. The obsessive urge to gnaw the nails indicates samoyedstvo, hatred for one of the parents. If a person suffers from hypertension, then many old emotional problems are not solved. If something squeezes the chest, interferes with breathing, provokes attacks of suffocation, bronchial asthma, then there is a feeling of depression, fear of life, fear of breathing life full of breasts. The treatment of this kind of disease, Louise Haye sees in pronouncing positive affirmations - statements reflecting a new look for life. For example, a serious liver disease, hepatitis, which, according to Louise's theory, arises from fear, anger and hatred, will go away when uttering such statements: "My consciousness is pure and free. I forget the past and go to meet the new. Everything goes well".
