Why love is blind

Why love is blind

The notion of "blindness of love" entered into the saying. It is understood that the object of love can have any flaws and even vices, but for a lover they will not be obvious.

The state of love

Medics of antiquity and the Middle Ages considereda state of love as a disease requiring treatment with food abstinence, walking and ... wine. One of the reasons for this approach was precisely the idealization of the beloved, which accompanies love.

Halo effect

One can argue about whether there is "love withfirst sight ", but it can not be denied that in the emergence of love one of the key roles is played by the first impression produced by man. It is hardly possible to fall in love with a person who did not like right away. And here comes into effect a phenomenon that psychologists call the halo effect. The halo effect is manifested not only in relation to the beloved. He implies that all actions and qualities of a person are perceived "through the prism" of the impression that he made at the first meeting. If the impression turned out to be favorable, as it happens in the case of lovers, everyone will like everything in person, and even the shortcomings will "turn" into virtues. The loafer will be presented to the girl in love with "an unsatisfied creative person looking for himself," a rude young man - "a real man, devoid of female effeminacy." A man in love will see "innocent innocence" in a girl who does not differ in intelligence, and "in a sloppy woman" "sweet negligence".

Physiological causes

Research specialists from the LondonUniversity A. Bartelis and S.Zeki revealed the physiological basis of "blindness of love." During the experiment, 17-year-old volunteers who subjectively assessed their condition as "insane love" showed pictures of their beloved friends and strangers. When looking at the photos of beloved, all the subjects activated four brain regions that did not react to the demonstration of all the other photographs. It is noteworthy that two regions of four are activated when taking some narcotic drugs. In other words, love is a phenomenon "related" to an altered state of consciousness, in which it is difficult to expect an adequate perception of reality. American researcher H. Fisher has established which hormones play a leading role in a state of passionate love. One of these hormones was dopamine, creating a sense of pleasure. Especially many dopamine recipes in the caudate nucleus and the shell - subcortical areas of the brain, which are responsible for the emotions associated with positive reinforcement. At the same time, the excitation of the posterior part of the cingulate gyrus, associated with negative emotions, is reduced. In such conditions, everything that is associated with positive emotions "grows" in the eyes of a person, and what can cause negative emotions - in particular, the shortcomings of the lover - is "discarded" by consciousness. Similar changes in the functioning of the brain occur with the use of drugs, and in this sense, love can really be considered a "mental disorder", as did the ancient physicians.
