One of the most joyful and desirable days for any student is June 1. In addition to being the first day of summer and the longest vacation, it is also the International Children's Day.

Children's Day

Historical reference

They say that children are flowers of life. Calculate how many such flowers were broken, dented and trampled during the Second World War is not possible. The decision to create a day commemorating the rights of children was made back in 1925 at the World Conference in Geneva. This conference was dedicated to ensuring the well-being of children throughout the world. And, actually, the holiday itself is due to the International Democratic Federation of Women. This organization, under the aegis of the UN, inspired by the nightmarish events of the war of the 1940s, took an oath in Paris in 1949: to fight for the indefatigable maintenance of international peace as the main guarantor of child safety, happiness and prosperity. A little later, during the Moscow session of WIDF, implementing the decisions of its second congress, the International Children's Day was established. African children, besides the international one, have their own holiday - the day of an African child. It was initiated by the Organization of African Unity. The reason for this decision was the shooting in 1976 of a column of students and schoolchildren advocating for the right to receive education in their native language. The Children's Day of Africa (the so-called holiday in European countries) was established in 1991, celebrated on June 16. The first international child protection day was celebrated in 1950. In the Soviet Union, like today in Russia, it is customary to start the holiday with speeches, discussions on the well-being of children's life. Many charity concerts are organized on this day, actions are beginning and are coming to an end, designed to solve the problems of children in a difficult life situation. The program of cultural events of the holiday includes children's sports, the organization of cognitive sites, the display of special feature films and other entertainment programs. Not only children are involved in active participation, but also their parents.

Why June 1?

The history of the holiday hides only one fact: why the date of the celebration was elected on June 1. The opinion that has survived to this day attributes it to the glory of the Consul General of China, who held this post in 1925. Having gathered a group of orphans on June 1, he arranged for them a special, colorful festival - Duan-yi Jie, Dragon Boat Festival. For some, probably, happy coincidence, the date of celebration coincided with the date of the Geneva "children's" conference. The coincidence was considered significant and it was June 1 that was chosen for the international holiday.
