The league was created in 1917 and since then the best hockey clubs of the USA and Canada are taking part in the struggle for the Stanley Cup, which is the most prestigious trophy for club hockey.
Initially, the league consisted of four teams(two from Montreal, one from Ottawa and one from Toronto), then it gradually began to increase, and by the present time is a tournament in which thirty clubs compete for the main trophy.
The teams are divided into two conferences, insidewhich have divisions. In the NHL play in two stages. The first is a regular championship, following the results of which the eight best teams of conferences fall into the playoffs for the winner of the Stanley Cup.
