Where is Panama?

Panama: geographical location

If you look carefully at the map of the world, or ratherto the part where the North and South America is located, you can see that these two continents are connected with each other by a narrow strip of land. The bottleneck of this strip is called the Panama Isthmus. Here is located a small state of Panama. Exact geographical coordinates: 9 00 N, 80 00 W. From the north side Panama is washed by the Caribbean Sea, which belongs to the Atlantic Ocean, to the south - the Panama Bay of the Pacific Ocean. Through the whole territory of the state there is a unique construction - the Panama Canal, which connects the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic . The design of this channel is one of the most complex construction projects in the history of mankind. It is considered to be one of the largest in length artificial waterways. Its length is more than 80 km. The Panama Canal has had a tremendous impact on the development of shipping and the economy not only in the Western Hemisphere, but throughout the world. On the east side Panama's closest neighbor is the state of Colombia (until 1903 Panama was part of that state). And on the western side of Panama borders with Costa Rica. In addition to the territory that lies on the mainland, Panama owns the islands of Koiba, Taboga, Isla Grande and many small islets. One of the largest archipelagos Bocas del Toro is located off the coast of the Caribbean Sea, and the archipelago of Las Perlas and most of the other islets are scattered along the Pacific coast of the country. The total area of the territory of Panama is about 78,000 square kilometers.

Panama is the land of the seas and mountains

On the map it is clear that in the central regionsPanama is dominated by mountainous terrain. Across the country stretch the mountain ranges - the Cordillera de Varagua (in the west) and the Cordillera de San Blas (in the east), having a height of 800 to 1300 meters. The highest point on the map of Panama is the Baru volcano (3475 m), also called Chiriki: by the name of the province where it is located. The slopes of the mountains are covered with dense evergreen forests. In the coastal areas of Panama, the area is mostly hilly and plains. Since the country is located near the equator, the climate here is subequatorial: year-round heat, high humidity and cloudiness, seasonal temperature fluctuations are insignificant. The warmest region is the coastal zone of the Pacific Ocean.
