Basic principles of merchandising

From the point of view of marketing, merchandising isa set of measures aimed at increasing the attractiveness of goods through the use of various methods relating to the assortment, the situation in the display case, the combination of colors and other points associated with the "laying out" of the goods. There are two main approaches to organizing the layout of goods on the shelves and storefronts. The first of these is sometimes called "visual merchandising", and is associated, mainly, with the impact on the perception of the buyer. For example, the fact that the most expensive goods in the category are, as a rule, at eye level - the result of exactly this approach. Visual merchandising is closely related to psychology and design, since the development of presentation techniques takes into account the characteristics of human perception, and manipulative technologies are also used. Category merchandising is an approach often used by large retailers. It is based on the fact that suppliers and manufacturers of certain types of products conclude a special contract with the store, which clearly specifies the rules for laying out their goods. This method allows distributors to promote certain positions, seeking their placement in the most advantageous parts of the storefront. In this case, the duties of employees of a supermarket or a store are reduced only to replenish the stocks of products in storefronts, without delving into the subtleties of the principles of their placement.

Merchandiser work

In the staffing table of most supermarketsthere are positions merchandisers. Basically, however, their functions include only updating the goods on the shelves, according to the previously known principle of laying out. In fact, the job responsibilities of these merchandisers are slightly different from the functions that ordinary loaders perform, except that work in the supermarket hall involves following a certain dress code. With regard to the payment of merchandisers in supermarkets, it is also comparable to that of unskilled personnel. Nevertheless, this position is a good option for starting a career in trade: with sufficient experience, a merchandiser can take the position of a sales consultant, then a cashier, a shift supervisor, a commodity expert or even a store manager. In distribution organizations, there is also a merchandiser's position, but the job responsibilities here are completely different. These employees spend almost all of their working hours on the trade points, supervising the laying out of goods on the ground, advising shop workers and observing the work of competitors.
