How to use Lasso in Photoshop

Select on the image a non-uniform colora domain having an arbitrary shape and, the problem is not simple. This is done using tools from the group "Lasso". All of them are located under the button with the loop image on the "Tools" panel. For quick dialing, use the hotkey L.

The lasso serves to select an arbitrary region

How does the usual "Lasso" work?

Theoretically, everything is simple. The tool allows you to create lines of any shape, as if you are drawing with a pencil. Click on the point at which the selection will begin, and then, without releasing the mouse button, move the cursor along the selection area. You must return to the starting point. If you release the button earlier, the program will automatically terminate the started selection with a straight line. But in practice you are unlikely to accurately circle a complex circuit. A mouse is too rough a tool, it is convenient to use Lasso if you are using a graphics tablet.

Rectangular Lasso

The tool differs from the previous one in thatDraws only straight lines. "Rectangular lasso" is great if the outline of the selected object consists of corners and a set of straight lines (for example, a star). With the mouse, set the starting point and move the cursor along the contour until you reach the top of the corner. At this point, make another click to create an additional point and change the direction of the selection. Repeat this action until you select the entire shape and return to the starting point. When a small circle appears under the cursor, click to finish the selection.

Magnetic Lasso

When using this Photoshop toolAnalyzes the colors of the pixels under the cursor, and independently determines which ones to highlight. "Magnetic Lasso" works well only on a simple contrasting background. Click on the point at which you want to start the selection and slowly move the cursor along the outline of the object. You do not need to hold down the mouse button. The program automatically adds anchor points on the contour line. To complete the selection, move the cursor to the starting point. If the selection part passes through areas with a small contrast or the contour of the object has sharp angles, you must add several own reference points by clicking on the outlined contour. If the point is incorrectly set, hover the cursor over it and press the Backspice key. If a part of the outline forms a straight line, you can temporarily switch to the Rectangular Lasso tool. To do this, hold down the Alt key, click on the point at which the selection should begin in a straight line, and then at the point where you want to end it.

How to set up the instruments of the Lasso group

All tool controls are locatedon the options bar. In its left part there are four buttons that allow to select the mode of the tool: "Create new selection", "Add to selected area", "Subtract from selected area" and "Intersect with selected area." "Feathering" blurs the selection boundaries, its values are entered in pixels. The higher the number, the more the contour of the selection is blurred. If you leave the field blank, the edges of the selected area will be sharp. If you check the "Smoothing" check box, then the edges of the selected area will be slightly softened to smooth the color transition between the background and the selected object. The amount of smoothing is determined automatically by the program. In addition to the already listed parameters available for almost all selection tools, the "Magnetic Lasso" also has additional settings. Correctly using them, you can greatly simplify the work with the tool and improve the quality of the selection. The "Width" parameter indicates the distance at which the cursor should be from the edge of the object. The default value is 10 pixels, but it can be changed from 1 to 256. If the contour of the object has many angles, the value should be reduced, and to increase the smoothness of objects, increase. "Contrast" controls the color difference between the background and the selected object . If the edges of the object differ little from the background, try increasing the percentage, but it is better to use another tool. The value specified for the "Frequency" parameter affects the number of reference points that the tool will create. If the selected fragment has a complex contour with many turns, corners, bends - the number of reference points will have to be increased. By default, this field is set to 57, which is optimal for most cases. "Changing the pen pressure causes the pen width to change" - a function with this long name is intended for owners of graphic tablets. Its application will allow you to change the width settings by pressing the pen on the tablet stronger or weaker.
