How to search for root words

One of the most common problemswriting letters, articles, appeals and other texts is the production of vowels in an unstressed position at the root of the word. The main difficulty in this situation is that when a vowel is not under stress, it is not pronounced clearly, so it is difficult to make an unambiguous conclusion about which letter should be in this place.

Checking unstressed vowels in the root of the word

In the case of verification of a vowel, which is in an unstressed position at the root of the word, there are special methods that can help to check whether the vowel is correctly selected. One of them is the selection of a test word in which a questionable vowel letter will be under stress. In this situation, it will sound quite clear, and it becomes clear that this letter should be written in all the same root words. For example, in the nominative singular, the word "water" can cause doubts in writing the first vowel, but after selecting the test word "water" it becomes clear that the letter "o" should be in this place. In some cases, verification may be required for several vowels at once. For example, for the word "young", two root words can serve as a test for this word: "youth", which demonstrates that the first place in the word being checked should be the letter "o" and "young", which shows that in the second case too should stop on the same letter.

Possible difficulties in verifying

Nevertheless from this rule, as well as froma significant number of other grammatical rules of the Russian language, there are exceptions. One of them is connected with such a phenomenon as the alternation of vowels. For example, in words with the root "pasch-" in place of the vowel, in most cases the letter "a" will be put, and in words with the root "ros-" - the letter "o", although these words are considered to be single-root. In addition, it should be borne in mind that in Russian there are so-called homonyms - words with the same sound, but different spelling and meaning. An example of such words is the couple "trying on", for example, clothes, and "reconcile", for example, friends. In this situation, it is important not to make a mistake using the homonym as a test word. Therefore, if there are any doubts about the spelling of any unstressed vowel at the root of the word, it is better to refer to the spelling dictionary.
